Company Wins Arbitration That Could Cost Teamster Members Millions
An arbitrator ruled recently that a clause placed in the contract that
allowed the company to pay air hub and gateway employees $8.50 an hour
applies not only to part-timers but full-timers as well. This clause, if
the arbitration decision stands, would allow the company to pay new
full-time combo employees at their air operations around the country
$8.50 per hour, regardless of previous company seniority. Full-time
combo employees will be scaled back to the part-time wage rate in
article 22, which contains no top rate of pay.
In contrast, employees in ground hubs receive a top pay of $17.50 after
two years and start at $13.00 per hour.
This is a major loss for the IBT parcel division. The solution is to
eliminate this "Trojan Horse" language from the contract in 2002.
Here is the applicable language:
Article 40 Section 6 Part H
h. Air hub and gateway employees and Air Walkers shall be paid at the
"all other" rate of pay as shown in Article 22. However, if a part-time
employee is awarded an air walker job he/she shall continue to receive
his/her inside rate of pay in accordance with Article 22.
