Tom Leedham Rank 7 File Power

Campaign UpdateAugust 4, 2000

Petition Drive Big Push Is ON!

The petition drive to officially accredit the Tom Leedham Rank & File Power Slate is on the move and drawing huge support. With the petition deadline approach, now is time to double out efforts to put our campaign over the top.
We are sorting thousands of petitions received so far, and have reports from Area and Local Coordinators of thousands more. But we need more signatures to finish the job.
We need you to take some time, today and in the days ahead, to get more signatures and get them to our headquarters.

Hoffa Busted for Illegal Campaigning
August 1 was to be a day of celebration for the Hoffa Campaign. Instead, it became a day of infamy.

On the very day Hoffa set as a deadline for completing his petition drive, the Election Administrator handed down a decision voiding nearly all of the Hoffa petition signed so far.

The ruling, one of the first issued by the new E.A., is a major blow the Hoffa campaign.

The case stems from the Hoffa campaign's faxing of blank copies of petition forms to every Teamster local. The use of union resources to promote candidates for union office is a violations of the elections rules (and of federal law). It will be interesting to see if the Hoffa campaign starts over with new petitions.

Hoffa officials and campaigners were also hit with other violations. The campaign has only started and then Hoffa campaign is already being caught in major violations. So much for Hoffa's promises to respect members' right to a democratic election.

Breaking News: We have two slate members. Frank Burdell is joining us as a Central Region Vice President candidate. Frank worked for 27 years at Roadway and is an elected Business Agent at Local 407 in Cleveland. John Hull will be a candidate for Canadian Vice President. John is a steward at TST Overland and a long time activist in Ontario Local 938. Welcome Frank and John! Looking for their bois in the next Campaign Update.
