Contract Year One: Where Do We Stand?
One year down and five to go. August 1 marks the one-year anniversary of the new UPS contract. Where do we stand at the end of this first year and where do we need to go in the coming year? This is a good time to take stock, using some of the issues members said were most important going into last year's contract.

Pension
Full-time UPS Teamsters rated this their top concern in the IBT survey circulated before the contract. On the plus side, the contract calls for a sixty (60) cents per hour increase towards health and pension benefits each year (seventy cents the last year) of the contract.

Members in the largest pension fund, covering the central and southern states, found out quickly that improving pensions was far from the top concern of IBT officials. Although the Central States fund claimed to be in financial distress not a single penny of the sixty cents went into pension benefits. And while other pension funds in the east raised pension benefits, the Central States Fund froze them.

And the Western Conference fund, despite strong financial health, cut benefit accruals on July 1.

In response, members have organized pension improvement committees in both the West and in the Central and South areas.

Will the IBT take action to improve benefits? On August 1, benefit contributions were increased an additional sixty cents per hour. What actions will the IBT leadership take to improve our pensions?

New Technology
New contract language promised to bring into the union jobs created as a result of new technology. This hasn't meant much given that UPS's goal has been to use technology to (1) eliminate jobs and (2) squeeze more production out of remaining workers. No language was put in place to protect against these very real threats.

With the rollout of Smart Label and the accompanying pre-load system, UPS is moving ahead rapidly while the international union gets left in the dust. In centers where the new system has been implemented pre-load positions are being eliminated and stop counts for package drivers are on the rise. The IBT has been entirely silent about these changes.

Excessive Overtime
After benefits and wages full-time UPS Teamsters listed work schedule and hours as their next highest concern. How have we fared on this front? Well, new language was also added on this issue. Many areas report little if any difference, with ten-hour and longer days common and requests for relief from overtime ignored.

Full-time Job Creation
The Hoffa administration gave UPS a two year delay on the creation of new full-time jobs so we will see no progress here for yet another year. The elimination of Article 22.3 jobs, however, is a real concern. We need a real monitoring and enforcement program coordinated by the International Union.

Contract Books
Last but not least. Enforcement of the new contract needed to start the day it was signed. Getting contract books into the hands of stewards and members helps boost enforcement. Yet many parts of the country have yet to see their contract books even after a year has passed. Some locals have started distributing books. What is the hold up in other areas?

The Year Ahead
To press for enforcement and for an International Union with real power we need to build a larger, broader and deeper network of concerned UPS Teamsters. That is what the UPS Committee of TDU is all about. This is an excellent time to think about recruiting coworkers to TDU. Go to www.tdu.org for more information.

Your UNION Leaders working for the Company and getting PAID by UNION members to
SCREW the WORKERS
Here is a question. Are you getting your monies worth from your union? I think not!

If you really think about it, the union members are really getting screwed. Sure your union negotiates your contracts for you, and they will negotiate your wages and then raises your union dues and then tells you we are guaranteeing your job to stay in this country. Is your health insurance any better? How much do you pay for that insurance?  How much does you’re elected officials pay for their insurance? Now, let’s talk about your pension fund. Are you guaranteed a retirement if and when you get to that point? Let’s say that you have 18 yrs. of service and you have paid your union dues religiously and you have and accident and they terminate you from the union and from your place of work, what do you get? Does your Business Agent (BA) do his/her job to the fullest for you? Do your elected officials pay union dues? They are in the Union also! Knowing how the money scheme works and knowing how the corporate world works, they don’t pay for health insurance or Union dues. they also vote themselves a separate retirement package, so well ENHANCED it would make the president of the U.S.A. cry. The working class (you and me) pay for the elected officials top of the line health care insurance and their union dues. Your elected officials get to take lavish trips and we pay for those with those high price union dues and they write them off. Check with the IRS to see the ruling on how much time they have to be at the meeting, to write off the expenses.

We feel that UNIONS are the major part of INFLATION. Think about it for a minute.  The unions say they fight for your rights. They fight for better pay, better life and health care insurance. That’s all good for every one. Right? Wrong! Sure I was making $22.50 per hour but my union dues are $100.00 a month. Sure the union got me the wages. But the company doesn't pay for the loose; the end user pays for my wages. The company is in business to make a profit. Think about it, the union fights for me to make $22.50 per hour, and for the pension fund that the company and the union runs and operates. The company has to raise the rates to make a profit. Now the end user has to raise the rates for his operation to make a profit. So the circle starts. You raise, I raise, you raise your rates again, and I have to raise my rates again so I can make a profit also. Let’s look at the trucking company that had to go out of business almost over night. What union trucking company closed its doors recently? Can any one answer this question? Can any one answer what caused the closure?

Ok, here is something else to ponder. Let’s assume Teamsters Union Local ??? has 14,000 members (give or take a few). Each member is paying $100.00 in union dues per month.  That is $1.4 million dollars a month. How many months are there in a year? 12. $1.4million X 12 = $16.8 million a year. What can you do with $16.8 million? What happens when that money is put into the stock/money/investment market?

That is a lot of money. Now, how many Locals are there? Let’s be conservative here. Let’s make Teamsters Union Local ??? as an average, just to keep it simple. Let’s say there is 1000 Locals in the U.S. alone. $16.8 million X 1000 = 16.8 BILLION dollars a year. With this amount some one can really do some HEAVY DAMAGE to some little guy who is trying every day to make a living for his family.

Check out the web site of www.darkersideofbrown.com and see what can happen to you and all your money, your life and all the things you have worked so hard for.

With $16.8 billion dollars a year (this is very conservative), think of the computer technician staff and office staff and lawyers and think tank persons and tacticians and accounting staff you can have. With this kind of money anything can be BOUGHT.

Look, I’m not talking down about all Unions; there are a lot of good ones out there. They work for the working class. When I pay my dues, I expect my union Stewarts and BA and union reps and union spokes person to stand up and defend and protect my rights and to get me everything I am due. I don’t expect to get a lawyer and take my Union to court to get my rights and what I am due. The Union leaders speak out of both sides of their mouth when they want your vote to get into office. When they are in office they do what they didn’t tell you. They do very little of what they have promised you. They make dirty hand shakes and hold talks with out letting you know what has happening. Look at what happen in Los Vegas, Nevada. The Union hired non-union workers to save themselves money.

Frank? Pat? James? Mike? How much does your Life and Health insurance cost us? And the union dues?
